Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)in Burlington, Ontario
Build Skills to Navigate Intense Emotions and Relationships
When emotions run high, it can be difficult to respond the way you want to. You may find yourself caught in the same arguments, reacting before you’ve had time to think, or feeling overwhelmed by situations others seem to handle easily. DBT offers a supportive space to understand these patterns and learn practical ways to manage them.
Working together, we’ll build skills to navigate difficult emotions, communicate more effectively, and make choices that reflect what matters to you.
Roneldi Feaver is the owner of Elite Mind Psychotherapy and an experienced DBT therapist.
WHAT IS DBT?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy
Originally developed by psychologist Dr. Marsha Linehan in the late 70s for individuals experiencing severe emotional dysregulation and borderline personality disorder, DBT is now widely used to help people develop healthier ways of coping with intense emotions, relationship difficulties, impulsive behaviours, stress, and emotional overwhelm.
At the heart of DBT is the idea that acceptance and change can exist at the same time.
You can accept how you feel and choose not to act on every emotion.
You can understand why you developed certain coping mechanisms and recognize that they may no longer be serving you.
You can have compassion for yourself and take responsibility for changing unhealthy patterns.
HOW DBT HELPS
The Four Skills at the Heart of DBT
Mindfulness
Mindfulness teaches you how to notice your innermost thoughts, emotions, and urges without immediately reacting to them. Creating distance between thoughts and actions.
Emotion Regulation
Emotion Regulation helps you how to understand your feelings and emotions, identify triggers, and learn healthier ways to manage emotional intensity.
Distress Tolerance
Distress Tolerance teaches you to move through painful or overwhelming moments without making them worse through impulsive or destructive behaviours.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Interpersonal Effectiveness focuses on relationships, helping you communicate your needs, establish boundaries, manage conflict, and maintain self-respect.
THE GOAL OF DBT
The Goal Isn’t to Stop Feeling
One of the most powerful lessons within DBT is this:
Your feelings are real, but they don’t always have to determine your behaviour.
You can feel angry without attacking or returning the feeling.
You can feel rejected without chasing reassurance.
You can feel anxious without immediately escaping the discomfort.
You can miss someone without reaching for them.
You can feel overwhelmed and still choose what happens next.
DBT helps create space between emotion and action, and within that space, we begin to have choices.
The goal isn’t to become less sensitive, less emotional, or less human.
It’s learning how to experience difficult emotions without allowing them to take control of your life.
